Weeds – a cause of misery and a curse to gardeners everywhere, and the sooner they're gone, the better. Fortunately, the herbicide Roundup takes on their robust and bothersome growth and quickly decimates their population, giving you more time for outdoor enjoyment and less for warring with weeds. Wherever you have unwanted growth, Roundup makes a product that's marketed to tackle the crisis and with most, visible results are obvious just a few hours following application.

Roundup’s Family of Products

Back in 1974, Monsanto created and distributed the original Roundup, a herbicide with glyphosate as its main active ingredient. Even today when Roundup is mentioned, you're more than likely picturing the original weed killer, which is still a popular choice with gardeners. A subsidiary of the Scotts Miracle-Gro company is currently Monsanto's exclusive marketing and distribution agent for Roundup in the United States and offers various herbicidal products under the Roundup name. The Roundup arsenal of weed killers is marketed to treat everything from weedy flower beds and vegetable gardens to undesirable woody plants and weeds in lawns.

Roundup for Garden Weeds

Whether it’s your flower or vegetable garden, nobody wants weeds to take over. If weeds are starting to rear their ugly heads, Roundup has several products that can take care of the problem.

Roundup Precision Gel Weed & Grass Killer: The herbicide glyphosate is contained in a special gel stick that makes application easier and less likely to harm desirable plants. It works on actively growing annual and perennial weeds and is suitable for use in containers, vegetable and flower gardens, around trees, and along fences, driveways and walkways. Watch for visible evidence of the herbicide working in about six hours, with weeds wilting and starting to yellow, and then completely dying down to the roots in one to two weeks. The herbicide is rainproof after two hours.

Roundup Ready-To-Use Weed & Grass Killer III: This premixed glyphosate formula kills grasses and annual and perennial weeds and comes in various applicator styles, including Sure Shot Wand, Comfort Wand and Pump ‘N Go sprayer, as well as refills for the various applicators. The product is rainproof in 10 minutes, and weeds show signs of browning, wilting and yellowing in approximately three hours, with a complete kill in one to two weeks.

Roundup for Weedy Lawns

If weeds are taking over your lawn, Roundup makes a product designed specifically to eliminate these weeds and leave your turfgrass unharmed. The product comes in several ready-to-use sizes, as well as a ready-to-use refill and a concentrate you mix yourself.

Roundup for Lawns5: The formula contains the herbicides penoxsulam, sulfentrazone, 2,4-D, dimethylamine salts and dicamba and is suitable for use on Southern grasses. The product targets more than 90 common weeds affecting turfgrass, killing them down to the root. It starts working immediately after application and is rainproof about four hours after applying. Before applying, thoroughly water the lawn.

Driveway and Patio Weeds

Roundup offers several big guns when it comes to killing unwanted grass and weeds, as well as preventing a reinfestation for up to 12 months. Only use these herbicides in areas where you don’t want any vegetation to grow for long periods of time or where you don’t intend to plant, such as on gravel driveways, patios and sidewalks. Don’t apply to areas over the root systems of desirable plants or trees, or damage may occur.

Roundup Max Control 365: This weed killer contains glyphosate and imazapic and prevents additional weed growth for up to 12 months. The product is rainproof 30 minutes after application, and you should see weeds begin yellowing and wilting about 12 hours after applying, with complete death to the roots in one to two weeks. You have the option of a ready-to-use container or a concentrate that you can mix on your own.

Back

Roundup Extended Control Grass & Weed Killer Plus Weed Preventer II: This product also contains glyphosate and imazapic and prevents additional weed growth for up to four months. After 30 minutes, the product is rainproof, and the weeds should begin to wilt and yellow in about three hours, with a complete kill down to the roots in one to two weeks.

Woody Plants

If you have unwanted brush and vines like poison ivy (Toxicodendron radicans, USDA zones 3 through 10) encroaching on your property, don’t despair because there's a Roundup herbicide designed specifically to tackle these problems. The product also kills weeds and grasses, and when used undiluted, it works as a stump killer.

Roundup Poison Ivy Plus Tough Brush Killer: The two main ingredients are glyphosate and triclopyr. The herbicide is rainproof after 30 minutes, and you should start seeing results, with the targeted plants withering and yellowing, about 24 hours after applying. There are several options available, including a concentrated formula that you mix and ready-to-use containers with several wand styles.

Application Precautions

When using any type of herbicide, make sure you properly use and apply the product to keep yourself, children, pets, desirable plants and the local environment safe. Before using, always read and familiarize yourself with the specific Roundup product's label instructions. In addition, wear protective clothing, like a long-sleeved shirt and goggles, to keep the herbicide off your skin and out of your eyes. Wash your hands immediately after using and wash your clothes separately as soon as possible. Allow the product to completely dry before permitting children or pets into the treated area.

For the best results, apply any Roundup product on a windless, sunny day when temperatures are above 60 degrees Fahrenheit and no rain is in the forecast. When treating the targeted plant, completely cover it with the herbicide and shield desirable plants with a piece of cardboard or something else that keeps the spray away from them. If you accidentally spray a plant, quickly rinse the herbicide off with water. To keep the environment safe, don’t apply any herbicide close to a body of water, storm drain, ditch or gutter where runoff occurs.

If using a tank sprayer to apply any Roundup product, use one made of fiberglass, plastic, stainless steel or plastic-lined steel. Avoid using a sprayer made of unlined or galvanized steel. Always follow each herbicide’s mixing instructions for amounts and application instructions so you don’t injure desirable plants. In addition, test the spray pattern on a concrete driveway before heading into the garden to ensure that you have the correct nozzle adjustment and don’t end up spraying nontargeted plants.

Quick Work of Weedy Situations

Roundup products have come a long way since that original bottle of glyphosate weed killer in the '70s. Whether you have weeds popping up in the lawn or waging a takeover of your flower garden, or poison ivy has made your yard its home, there's a Roundup herbicide that's marketed to defeat the problem and quickly.
